Sleep Tracker: White Noise is an app I use every night, and it has really helped me stick to a consistent sleep schedule. Basically, it combines a sleep tracker with a library of soothing sounds to help you fall asleep faster and wake up feeling more rested. The app was first launched in 2018, and I found it on the Google Play Store, though I believe it is also available on the App Store for iOS users. It has been downloaded over 10 million times, which shows how popular it is. The best part is that it is completely free to download. You do not need to register an account to use the basic sleep tracking and white noise features, although you can sign up to back up your data. There are in-app purchases for some of the premium sound packs and advanced analysis tools, and yes, there are occasional ads when you navigate the menus, but they are not too intrusive.

Using the Sleep Tracker: White Noise app is pretty straightforward. When I go to bed, I just open the app, hit the record button, and place my phone on the nightstand. It listens to my breathing and movement patterns to figure out when I fall asleep and enter different sleep stages. A tip I have is to set a custom mix of sounds from the library. I usually combine light rain with a fan sound to block out street noise. You can also set a timer for the sounds to fade out after 30 minutes so the app does not drain your battery all night. In the morning, the app wakes you up with a gentle alarm during your lightest sleep phase, which makes waking up way less groggy. Checking the sleep quality score each day is honestly addictive because it gives you data on how long you spent in deep sleep versus light sleep.

Before I found this app, I tried a few others like Sleep Cycle and Relax Melodies. Sleep Cycle is great for the alarm feature, but I found its free version too limited with only a few sounds. Relax Melodies has a huge sound library, but the ads annoyed me more because they kept popping up even during playback. I stuck with Sleep Tracker: White Noise because it strikes a nice balance. It gives me reliable sleep tracking without locking all the good stuff behind a paywall. The user interface is also cleaner and simpler than most, which matters when I am half-asleep and just want to tap a button.

Features

  • 🌙 Sleep Tracking with Sound Mixing: What sets this app apart from, say, Sleep Cycle, is that you can track your sleep stages while simultaneously playing a custom sound mix. Sleep Cycle focuses mainly on the alarm, but here, the tracking and sound features work together seamlessly. You get a chart showing your sleep phases right alongside the sounds you listened to, so you can see which mixes help you stay in deep sleep longer.
  • 🎧 Personalized Sound Library: Unlike Relax Melodies where you have to buy individual packs, Sleep Tracker: White Noise gives you a solid free library of 50+ sounds. You can layer up to three sounds together to create your own unique background noise. I love that I can blend ocean waves with a heartbeat sound without paying extra.
  • ⏰ Smart Gentle Alarm: The smart alarm wakes you up at the optimal time within a 30-minute window before your set wake time. This is standard in similar apps, but the key difference is that it uses your actual sleep tracking data from the night, not just estimated patterns. It feels more accurate, and I rarely wake up feeling disoriented.

Pros

  • ✨ Completely usable without an account: Many apps like Calm or Headspace require you to sign up before you can even test the features. Sleep Tracker: White Noise lets you use sleep tracking and sound playback right after installing the app from Google Play, no registration needed.
  • ✨ Low battery consumption: Compared to BetterSleep, which drains my phone battery quickly, this app is very power-efficient. Even with the microphone on all night, it only uses about 10% battery, which is impressive for a sleep tracking app.
  • ✨ Free core features are generous: While apps like Pzizz lock their best sounds behind a subscription, this app gives you a great variety of free white noise tracks and accurate sleep tracking without forcing you to spend money. The in-app purchases are more for optional extras.

Cons

  • ❌ Limited sleep coaching: Unlike Sleep Cycle, which offers detailed sleep tips and trends based on your data, Sleep Tracker: White Noise just presents the raw charts. You don't get much advice on how to improve your sleep quality, which is a letdown if you want more than just data.
  • ❌ Sound library could be bigger: While the free library is decent, it lacks nature sounds like thunderstorms or birdsong that are common in Relax Melodies. You have to buy separate packs for those, which feels unnecessary when competitors include them for free.
  • ❌ Occasional ads at bad times: The ads appear when you switch between screens, but sometimes they pop up right when you are trying to set the alarm for bed. It disrupts the wind-down routine, something that BetterSleep handles better by only showing ads in the menu.
  • ❌ No offline mode for sounds: If you download sounds from the app, you still need an internet connection to play them on some devices. I found that when I travel, the sounds fail to load if I'm offline, which doesn't happen with the White Noise app by TMSOFT.
