Apartments.com Rental Search is an app made by CoStar Group. The name of the app tells you exactly what it does: it helps people find apartments and other rentals across the United States. The app first showed up on Google Play and the App Store many years ago, and it has been updated a lot since then. On Google Play alone, the download count has passed ten million installs, which says a lot about how many renters trust it. You can download the app for free, and you do not need to register an account just to browse listings. You only sign in when you want to save a search or contact a property manager. There are no in app purchases, and ads are very rare. Most of what you see is paid placement from property owners, not annoying pop ups.

Using the app is simple. You open it, type in a city, ZIP code, or neighborhood, and set your price range and number of bedrooms. The map view is the part I use the most because it shows you where each place sits compared to your work or school. A good tip is to turn on notifications for new listings, since cheap units in popular areas disappear within a day. Another tip is to save more than one search, for example one for studios and one for one bedrooms, so you can compare results fast. If you see a place you like, contact the manager through the app instead of calling, because your message and the listing stay together in one thread. You should also check the photos and floor plans before you schedule a tour, which saves you a wasted trip.

I have tried Zillow, Realtor.com, and HotPads too, and honestly they all show many of the same listings. I keep coming back to Apartments.com because the search filters feel more accurate and the listing details are usually complete. HotPads is fine for a quick look, but its map loads slowly on my older phone. Zillow has more houses for sale than rentals in some markets, so it is not always the best fit if you only want an apartment. Realtor.com works well, yet I find the app slower to update when a unit is already taken. With Apartments.com, I get fewer dead listings, clearer rent prices, and a smoother experience overall. That is why it stays on my phone every time I move.

Features

  • 🏠 Huge listing pool: it pulls in millions of units across the US, far more than what Craigslist shows in one search.
  • 🗺️ Clean map search: you can draw your own area on the map, something Zillow makes harder to do on a phone.
  • 📞 Direct contact tools: you message managers inside the app, so you never lose track of who replied.
  • 🔔 New listing alerts: it pings you the moment a unit matches your filters, which beats checking Realtor.com all day.

Pros

  • ⭐ Fewer fake listings than Craigslist, which is full of scams.
  • ⭐ The filters are more detailed than HotPads, especially for pet and parking rules.
  • ⭐ Photos and floor plans are usually complete, unlike some Zillow posts.
  • ⭐ The app is free and does not push you to buy anything.

Cons

  • ⚠️ Some top spots in search results are paid ads, so Zillow may feel more neutral.
  • ⚠️ The app can be slow on older Android phones compared with HotPads.
  • ⚠️ Not every small landlord uses it, so Craigslist still has some units you will not find here.
  • ⚠️ You have to sign in to save searches, while Realtor.com lets you browse more freely.
