Autolist is a used car marketplace app that helps you find local listings from dealers and private sellers, compare prices, and check vehicle history. It first launched around 2013 and is available on both Google Play and the App Store. The app has more than 1 million downloads on Google Play alone, and it is free to download. You do not need to create an account just to browse cars, which is a nice change from some other apps. There are no in-app purchases for basic use, and ads are minimal, mostly showing dealer promotions inside listings.

Using Autolist is pretty simple. You open the app, enter your zip code, set a search radius, and then filter by make, model, year, price, mileage, and body style. You can save searches and get alerts when new cars match your filters. One tip: sort by "Great Deal" or "Fair Deal" ratings, because Autolist compares each listing against similar cars nearby. Another tip is to check the price history graph on a listing. If the car has been sitting for weeks, you might have room to negotiate. Also, message the seller through the app before driving out, and always run the VIN through a history report. The app makes it easy to call or text dealers directly from the listing page.

I have tried CarGurus, Cars.com, and Facebook Marketplace for used cars. CarGurus has more listings overall, but the interface feels crowded. Facebook Marketplace is free but full of sketchy listings and no price ratings. Autolist sits in a nice middle spot. The deal badges are honest, and the app loads fast even on older phones. I also like that it pulls listings from multiple sources, so I am not jumping between five different apps. For a normal person just looking for a decent used car without a lot of hassle, Autolist does the job well.

Features

  • 🔍 Price comparison: Autolist rates each car as a Great, Fair, or High price based on similar local listings. CarGurus does something similar, but Autolist shows the rating right on the search results without extra taps.
  • 📉 Price history: You can see how long a car has been listed and whether the seller has dropped the price. This is a standout feature that most similar apps hide or do not offer at all.
  • 📱 Simple filters: The filter menu is clean and quick. You can narrow by payments, mileage, and distance in seconds, while Cars.com takes more steps to do the same thing.
  • ⭐ Save and compare: You can save cars to a list and compare them side by side. This makes it much easier to decide between two or three final choices.

Pros

  • 👍 Honest deal ratings: The price badges feel more accurate than what I see on CarGurus, and they help me skip overpriced cars fast.
  • 👍 Broad listing pool: It pulls from dealers and private sellers, so I found more local options than on Cars.com in my area.
  • 👍 No account needed: I can browse, save, and contact sellers without signing up, unlike Facebook Marketplace where you need a profile.
  • 👍 Light and fast: The app runs smoothly and does not drain my battery like some heavier car apps do.

Cons

  • 👎 Fewer listings than CarGurus: In some rural areas, the selection is thin, so I still check CarGurus as a backup.
  • 👎 No financing tools: Cars.com has loan calculators and payment estimates built in, while Autolist sends you to the dealer for that.
  • 👎 Limited seller chat: Messaging is basic, and some dealers reply slowly compared to Facebook Marketplace.
  • 👎 No new cars: It is strictly used cars, so if you want new inventory, you need a different app.
