myChevrolet is an app developed by General Motors (GM) specifically for Chevy owners. It's designed to be a central hub for managing your vehicle right from your phone. The app first launched back in 2014, and you can grab it for free on the Google Play Store and Apple's App Store. It's racked up over 10 million installs on Google Play alone, which shows it's pretty popular among drivers. Downloading and installing the app won't cost you a dime. To use it, you do need to register with a GM account and then link your vehicle using the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). While the app is free, there are in-app purchases for certain services, like data plans for the built-in Wi-Fi hotspot. You'll also run into some in-app ads, mostly promoting GM's own features and services. Once you're set up, you can start your car remotely, lock or unlock the doors, check your fuel level, and even see where you parked—handy if you forget in a big lot.
Using the app is pretty straightforward, but there are a few tips that make it smoother. First, make sure your Chevy has an active OnStar subscription or a compatible connectivity package, since most remote features rely on that. When you first log in, take a few minutes to set up your preferences in the settings—like choosing whether you want notifications for maintenance reminders or security alerts. The home screen shows your car's status at a glance, like tire pressure and oil life. If you're planning a trip, you can send a destination from the app to your car's navigation system, which saves time fiddling with the touchscreen inside. For electric or hybrid models like the Bolt EV, the app also tracks charging status and lets you schedule charging times to save on electricity costs. One tip: if the app seems slow to respond, make sure your phone has a good internet connection, because it relies on cellular data to talk to your car. Also, check for updates in the Google Play Store regularly, as GM often adds new features and fixes bugs. I've noticed that keeping the app updated prevents those annoying "unable to connect" errors that pop up sometimes.
When I compare myChevrolet to other car apps, like FordPass or Hyundai's Blue Link, it feels pretty similar in terms of basic functions. All of them let you remote start and check vehicle health. But I chose myChevrolet because I already own a Chevy, and the integration with GM's OnStar system is seamless. With Ford or Hyundai, you'd need to buy that specific brand's car first. Some apps, like Tesla's, are more advanced with stuff like Summon mode, but that's for a different price class. For a regular Chevy driver, this app covers what you need without overcomplicating things. It's not flashy, but it gets the job done.
Features
- 🚗 Remote vehicle control: You can start your engine, lock or unlock doors, and even activate the horn or lights from the app. Compared to a similar app like FordPass, myChevrolet feels a bit more responsive because it uses GM's own OnStar network. FordPass sometimes lags when I've tried it on a friend's car, but this one consistently responds within a few seconds.
- 🔋 EV-specific tools: For electric models like the Bolt EV, the app shows a detailed charging summary, including the remaining time to full charge, your range, and a map of nearby charging stations. Hyundai's Blue Link has a similar feature, but myChevrolet integrates better with public charging networks like ChargePoint, making it easier to plan long trips.
- 🛠️ Maintenance alerts: The app tracks your oil life, tire pressure, and other service needs, and sends push notifications when something's due. It even lets you schedule a service appointment directly through the app. FordPass has this too, but myChevrolet gives you a more detailed breakdown of what's wrong, like which tire is low, instead of just a general warning.
- 📍 Parked car locator: If you forget where you parked, the app shows your car's last known location on a map. You can also send walking directions to your phone. This is pretty standard across apps, but myChevrolet's map view is cleaner and uses Google Maps, which I prefer over the clunky maps in some other apps like Kia's UVO.
Pros
- 👍 Tight integration with OnStar: myChevrolet uses GM's OnStar system for all its remote functions, which means it's built into the car's hardware. FordPass relies on a separate cellular module, so if the signal is weak, myChevrolet still works because OnStar has its own antenna. I've never had a command fail, even in underground garages.
- 👍 User-friendly interface: The app has a clean design that's easy to navigate. Compared to Hyundai's Blue Link, which has too many menus, myChevrolet puts the most-used features like remote start and vehicle status right on the home screen. It's less cluttered and quicker for everyday tasks.
- 👍 Free basic features: You don't need a paid subscription for basics like checking fuel level or tire pressure. Tesla's app requires you to own a Tesla (which is expensive), while myChevrolet is accessible to anyone with a compatible Chevy, and the core functions are included with the car purchase.
Cons
- 👎 Requires subscription for remote start: After the initial free trial period with new cars, you have to pay for OnStar to use remote start and lock/unlock functions. FordPass offers these features without a subscription on most models, so it's a bit of a letdown that GM locks them behind a paywall.
- 👎 Occasional app crashes: I've had the app freeze or crash when trying to refresh the vehicle status, especially after an update from the Google Play Store. Hyundai's Blue Link is more stable in my experience, though it has its own quirks.
- 👎 Limited to Chevy vehicles: If you own a GM vehicle from another brand like GMC or Cadillac, you need a separate app called myGMC or myCadillac. FordPass works across Ford and Lincoln models in one app, which is more convenient for households with multiple vehicles from the same family.
- 👎 No Apple Watch support: Unlike Tesla's app, which has a watchOS version, myChevrolet doesn't work on smartwatches. You have to pull out your phone to lock the doors, which isn't ideal when your hands are full.
