I've been using Calorie Control & Diet Tracker by Willson Studio for about three months now, and honestly, it's become my go-to app for managing my daily food intake. This app is basically a calorie counter and diet diary rolled into one. It first launched back in 2019, and you can grab it on Google Play or the App Store. On Google Play alone, it's got over a million downloads, which tells you it's got a decent following. The best part? It's completely free to download and install, and you don't even need to register an account to start using it. There are optional in-app purchases if you want to unlock some advanced reports, and yes, there are gentle in-app ads, but they're not intrusive enough to annoy me.
When I first opened the app, I thought it would be complicated, but it's actually pretty straightforward. You just search for your food items in the database, tap to add them to your meal, and the app calculates your calories, protein, carbs, and fat automatically. One tip I'd give to new users is to use the barcode scanner feature—it's a lifesaver when you're eating packaged foods. Also, set up your daily calorie goal based on your weight and activity level, and the app will adjust as you log. I also like that you can log water intake and weigh-ins, which helps me see the bigger picture. For someone like me who isn't super tech-savvy, the interface feels clean and easy to navigate.
I've tried other apps like MyFitnessPal and Lose It! before, but I keep coming back to this one. MyFitnessPal always felt too cluttered with social features and ads, and Lose It! pushes its premium version way too hard. With Calorie Control & Diet Tracker, I get what I need without the noise. The food database isn't as massive as MyFitnessPal's, but it covers all the common items I eat, and the custom food option works great when I cook at home. For a free app, this one delivers way more than I expected, and I don't feel like I'm being forced into a subscription every five minutes.
Features
- 📊 The macro breakdown screen is way more intuitive than what MyFitnessPal shows. It gives me a clear pie chart of my protein, carbs, and fat, and it updates in real-time as I add meals. No other app I've tried makes this this easy to read.
- ⏰ The meal reminder notifications actually work. I set a lunch reminder at noon, and it pops up right on time, nudging me to log what I ate. MyFitnessPal's reminders always seemed to fire late or not at all on my phone.
- 🔍 The barcode scanner is surprisingly accurate. I scanned a random snack bar from my pantry, and it pulled up the exact product with correct nutrition info. Lose It! occasionally gives me wrong matches for regional brands, but this app hasn't failed me yet.
- 📝 The custom recipe feature lets me combine multiple ingredients into a single meal entry. This is super handy when I make a batch of soup or a stir-fry. I just enter the dish once, and I can reuse it later. Honestly, this feature alone beats what I've seen in most free apps.
Pros
- 🚫 No forced account creation. Unlike similar apps that make you sign up with an email or phone number, this one lets me start logging in seconds. It's a huge relief compared to FatSecret, which always nags me to connect my profile.
- 💾 Offline mode works perfectly. If I'm at a restaurant with no Wi-Fi, I can still add foods and track my meals. MyFitnessPal seems to require an internet connection for most functions, so this is a big win for me.
- 💵 The free version is actually usable. Many diet trackers hide basic features behind a paywall, but here, I get detailed charts and a decent food library without spending a dime. That's rare these days.
Cons
- 📉 The food database feels limited compared to MyFitnessPal. If I search for niche local dishes or homemade meals, I often can't find them, so I have to create a custom entry manually, which takes a bit of time.
- 📱 The UI can feel a little dated. The menus are simple, but there's no dark mode, and the font size options are limited. It's not a dealbreaker, but it's not as polished as some other apps out there.
- 📊 The weekly progress report only shows calorie averages, not sugar or fiber trends. For someone who wants more detailed insights like in Lose It!, this feels a bit shallow.
- 📣 The in-app ads, while not annoying, sometimes pop up as full-screen banners after I log a meal. It's a minor bump, but it's still an interruption that I don't get with the paid version of other trackers.
