I've been using the To Do List app by Splend Apps for a while now, and it's honestly become my go‑to for keeping track of daily tasks. It's a simple, straightforward productivity app that helps you organize your schedule with checklists and reminders. The app first launched in 2016 and is available on both the Google Play Store and the App Store. On Google Play alone, it has passed the 10 million download mark, which says a lot about its reliability. The app is free to install, and you don't need to register an account to use it—just download it and start adding tasks. There are optional in‑app purchases for extra features like widgets or custom themes, and you'll see some in‑app ads, but they're not intrusive.
Using the app is pretty straightforward. After you install it from the Google Play Store, you can create tasks by tapping the plus button. You can set due dates, add notes, and even organize tasks into different lists like work, personal, or shopping. A tip I picked up is to use the priority tagging feature. That way, I can mark the most urgent tasks and the app will automatically sort them to the top. Another thing I like is that you can set recurring reminders for things like weekly grocery runs, so I don't have to re‑enter them every time. I've also found it helpful to sync it with my phone's calendar—it just makes sure I don't miss anything important.
When I was looking for a task manager, I tried a few similar apps like Todoist and Microsoft To Do. But I ended up sticking with To Do List by Splend Apps for a couple of reasons. First, it's much lighter and doesn't slow down my phone. Second, it's completely free to start with, no subscription nagging. I'm not a power user, so I don't need all the fancy collaboration features that Todoist pushes. This app just does the basics really well without making me feel like I'm missing out.
Features
- 📝 Smart List Sorting – Unlike Todoist which feels cluttered, To Do List automatically groups tasks by due date and priority. You can view today's tasks or see the entire week at a glance. That makes planning way easier.
- 🔔 Custom Recurring Reminders – I haven't found any other free app that handles this better. You can set a task to repeat daily, weekly, or even on specific days—like “every Monday and Thursday.” Microsoft To Do doesn't offer that level of flexibility without a workaround.
- 🎨 Minimalist Widgets – The app offers resizeable home screen widgets that show your upcoming tasks directly. I tested similar apps, and many require a premium upgrade for widget support. Here, they're available right after the download.
- 📂 Unlimited Categories – You can create as many lists as you want without paying a cent. TickTick limits you to a few lists on the free version, but To Do List gives you full freedom from the start.
Pros
- ✅ No account needed – I can just download the app and start using it. I don't have to sign up or connect any Google account, which is great for privacy. Most apps like Todoist force you to register first.
- ✅ Low storage footprint – The app is very light on my phone, using less than 10 MB. Google Play lists it as compatible with old Android versions too, so it works on budget devices without lag.
- ✅ Intuitive design – The interface is clean and doesn't overwhelm you with settings. I've tried Any.do, which feels too colorful and distracting, but To Do List keeps it simple and functional.
Cons
- ❌ No cloud sync between devices – If you switch phones, your tasks won't carry over unless you manually export them. Microsoft To Do syncs automatically across devices, which is a feature I miss here.
- ❌ Limited collaboration features – You can't share a list with others, so it's not great for team projects. Todoist excels in that area with shared task assignments.
- ❌ Occasional ad pop‑ups – While ads are generally non‑intrusive, a full‑screen ad sometimes appears when you're adding a new task. It's a minor annoyance that TickTick avoids with its ad‑free free version.
- ❌ No natural language input – You have to manually enter each due date, unlike Todoist where you can type “tomorrow at 3pm” and it sets it automatically. This makes task entry slower.
