ITVX is the streaming app from ITV PLC, basically the UK's go-to place for watching ITV shows and channels on your phone or tablet. It first launched back in December 2022, replacing the old ITV Hub, and you can grab it for free from the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store. The app has been downloaded over 10 million times on Google Play alone, which is a solid number for a regional broadcaster. It's free to download and you don't have to pay to start watching, but you do need to register with an email or sign in with Google or Apple to use it. There's a free tier supported by in-app ads, plus an optional subscription called ITVX Premium that removes ads and unlocks extra movies and box sets.

Using ITVX is pretty straightforward. Once you install the app, you pick a show or live channel and just hit play. The free version forces you through a few ad breaks, but they're not too aggressive compared to some other free apps. A tip I'd give is to download episodes when you're on WiFi, since the download feature works offline even on the free tier, which is great for the commute. Sorting by “New & Trending” helps you skip the filler content, and the “Continue Watching” row saves your spot across devices if you sign in on your TV too.

I stuck with ITVX over similar apps like BBC iPlayer or Channel 4's All 4 mainly because it has the best mix of live TV and on-demand for ITV's stuff. iPlayer is great for BBC shows but doesn't have ITV's exclusive dramas or reality hits. All 4 is decent but feels clunkier to navigate and has more aggressive ad breaks. Plus, ITVX gives you access to ITV's back catalogue for free, while other apps lock older series behind paywalls. For a free app on Google Play, it strikes a good balance between content and cost.

Features

  • 📺 Live TV and catch-up in one place – ITVX combines live channels like ITV1 and ITV2 with on-demand shows, so you can watch the news or binge a series without switching apps. BBC iPlayer does live too, but ITVX's catch-up window for ITV shows tends to be longer, sometimes months, while iPlayer deletes stuff faster.
  • 🎬 Free movies without a subscription – The free tier includes a rotating selection of films, which is a standout feature since Channel 4's All 4 only gives you a handful of free movies, and they're often older ones. ITVX updates its movie library weekly, so there's always something new to try.
  • 📥 Offline downloads on the free plan – You can download shows to watch offline without paying a penny, unlike Netflix or Disney+ which lock downloads behind paid tiers. BBC iPlayer offers downloads too, but ITVX's free option feels more generous since you're not forced into a subscription for it.
  • 📱 Minimalist interface with quick search – The app's design is clean and snappy, with a search bar that actually finds shows by actor or genre. All 4's search is slower and returns weird results, so ITVX wins on usability for me.

Pros

  • ✅ Huge library of ITV exclusives – ITVX has exclusive rights to shows like “Love Island” and “Coronation Street” that you can't find on BBC iPlayer or All 4, making it the only place for fans of those series. The app also streams older ITV dramas from 20 years ago, which is a bonus for nostalgia seekers.
  • ✅ Ad breaks are shorter than All 4 – Comparing ad loads, ITVX's free tier runs ads that are typically 90 seconds per break, while All 4 can push 3-minute breaks. It makes a big difference when you're watching a 30-minute episode and don't want to wait forever.
  • ✅ Works smoothly on older phones – I've used ITVX on a 5-year-old Android phone, and it doesn't lag or crash as much as BBC iPlayer. ITVX seems optimized for lower-end hardware, which is rare for streaming apps on Google Play.

Cons

  • ❌ Content varies by region – Some shows are geo-blocked outside the UK, so if you travel, you might lose access to live channels. BBC iPlayer is the same, but All 4 lets you use a VPN more reliably without errors.
  • ❌ No 4K streaming even on Premium – Unlike Netflix or Amazon Prime, ITVX caps everything at 1080p, even if you pay for Premium. BBC iPlayer has some 4K content, so ITVX feels behind on picture quality for big dramas.
  • ❌ Rewinding live TV is clunky – If you pause a live show and try to rewind, the app sometimes jumps back to the start of the program instead of a few minutes. All 4 handles live rewind better with a smoother scrub bar.
  • ❌ App crashes when switching between WiFi and mobile data – I've had the app freeze mid-show when leaving my home WiFi. BBC iPlayer recovers seamlessly, but ITVX often needs a full restart, which is annoying on the bus.
