I've been using Moises: The Musician's AI App on my phone and tablet for a while now, and it's honestly changed how I practice. It's basically a music app that uses artificial intelligence to separate vocals from instruments in any song you throw at it. I first heard about it in 2021, and you can grab it from Google Play and the App Store for free, though there's also a paid subscription. The free download gets you a lot, but you'll hit some limits. As of right now, it has over 10 million installs on Google Play alone, which is pretty wild for such a niche genre of app. It doesn't force you to register to just listen to the stems, but you do need to create an account to save your projects. There are in-app purchases, like the premium plan for unlimited stems, and yeah, you might see some in-app ads if you're using the free version.
Using this app is pretty straightforward. You just pick a song from your library or search for one on YouTube, and the AI does its thing, splitting out the bass, drums, vocals, and other instruments into separate tracks. My biggest tip is to start with something simple, like a pop song, before trying to isolate a guitar solo from a dense metal track. The AI handles basic stuff like a champ. You can also mess with the tempo and pitch without changing the key or speed of the song, which is killer for learning tricky parts. If you're a bass player, just mute everything else and you can jam along to just the bass line.
Comparing it to other similar apps on Google Play, I've tried a few like Vocal Remover and Splitter. The difference is night and day. With Moises, the separation just sounds cleaner, less like a garbled mess. Other apps often leave weird artifacts or robotic sounds, but Moises keeps the tracks pretty pristine. I ended up choosing this one over the others because it feels like a real tool for musicians, not just a quick hack. It has a built-in metronome and smart tempo changes, which the simpler apps just don't offer. Basically, it feels like having a full production studio in your pocket.
Features
- 🎵 The stem separation quality is head and shoulders above something like Vocal Remover. While those simpler apps can split a track into maybe two or four parts with mixed results, Moises consistently gives me eight clean stems (vocals, bass, drums, and other instruments) that you can solo or mute. It's a game-changer for practicing because you can hear the bass line on its own without distortion, which I never got with the basic apps.
- 🔄 One feature I rely on constantly is the smart tempo and pitch shifting. In other apps like Anytune, you can adjust speed and key, but they sometimes mess with the overall sound quality. Moises does it with minimal artifacts, so I can slow down a fast solo to half speed and it still sounds like music, not chipmunks or sludge. The beat detection is also super accurate, which the competition often botches on complex tracks.
- 🎛️ The integrated metronome is a huge plus that sets it apart. Most stem-separator apps on Google Play just give you the stems and that's it. Moises has a built-in click track that syncs with the song's tempo after detection, so I can practice with a metronome that follows the actual rhythm of the song. It makes it feel like a full practice tool rather than just a utility.
Pros
- 💪 The standout strength is the sheer accuracy of the AI model. I've tried similar genre apps like Lalal.ai for stem separation, and while they're decent, Moises consistently pulls out cleaner bass lines and vocal tracks, even on layered rock songs with heavy distortion. It just feels more professional.
- 🧠 Another big plus is the smart playlist organization. Unlike basic apps that just dump your stems into a folder, Moises lets me sort my projects by tempo or key right from the Google Play version. It's a small thing, but when you have dozens of songs, it saves a huge amount of time.
- 📱 The cross-platform sync is a killer feature. I start a project on my phone during a commute, then pick it up on my tablet at home without skipping a beat. Other apps rarely offer this without an expensive subscription, but Moises does it smoothly.
Cons
- ⚠️ The main weakness is the limit on free downloads per month. On Google Play, you get five stems a month with the free tier, which is pretty stingy compared to something like Vocal Remover that lets you process dozens of songs for free. It forces you into the paid plan if you practice heavily.
- 🎤 The vocal removal isn't perfect on every genre. I tried it on a live recording of a jazz band, and the AI struggled because vocals and saxophone overlapped in the same frequency range. Other apps like PhonicMind handle certain complex mix types a bit better, but Moises gets closer on pop and rock.
- 📂 Importing files can be a hassle sometimes. Unlike simpler apps that let you grab any audio file from your device instantly, Moises requires you to either search YouTube or upload from your cloud storage. There's no direct file browser for local music on the Android app, which is a bit annoying.
