The Pregnancy App & Baby Tracker by BabyCenter is basically the go-to app for anyone who is expecting or has a newborn. It first came out way back in 2009, and you can grab it for free on both the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store. On the Google Play Store alone, it has over 10 million installs, which gives you an idea of how popular it is. You don't actually need to register to start using the app, but making an account lets you save your progress and get personalized info. It is completely free to download, though there are in-app purchases if you want to unlock certain extras, and yeah, there are also ads that pop up from time to time. It basically tracks your baby's development week by week, gives you daily tips, and lets you log things like kicks, contractions, and feeding schedules for after the baby arrives.
When you open the app, the first thing you do is set your due date or your baby's birthday, and then it tailors everything to that. The main screen shows you a cool 3D image of how big your baby is that week, comparing it to a fruit or a vegetable. For tips, I always make sure to check the "What's happening this week" section because it breaks down all the changes in a super simple way. A lot of people don't realize you can also use the community feature to chat with other moms due the same month as you, which is actually really helpful for getting real-world advice. I would recommend turning on the notifications because the app sends you little reminders about what to expect or when to log something, and that keeps you on track without having to remember everything yourself.
I have used a few other pregnancy apps like What to Expect and Ovia, but I keep coming back to this one. The main reason is that the BabyCenter app just feels more complete and less cluttered. Ovia has a nice interface, but it focuses a lot on the medical side of things, which can be a bit overwhelming. What to Expect is great for articles, but the community section in the BabyCenter app is way more active and supportive. I picked this app because it strikes a good balance between being informative and being easy to use. You do not need to be a tech expert to navigate it, and the information always seems reliable since BabyCenter has been around for years. It just feels like the safest bet when you are already dealing with the stress of pregnancy.
Features
- 🖼️ For the 3D baby development views, it is way better than What to Expect. BabyCenter gives you a rotatable 3D model that shows exactly what your baby looks like that week, while What to Expect just uses flat illustrations. It makes the whole experience feel more real.
- 📊 The kick counter in this app is much more intuitive than the one in Ovia. You just tap the screen every time you feel a kick, and it automatically tracks the pattern. Ovia requires you to start and stop a timer manually, which is annoying when you are just relaxing.
- 👶 The BabyCenter app has a "Baby Mode" after you give birth that switches the interface from pregnancy tracking to newborn tracking. Other apps, like Sprout, make you download a separate app for the newborn phase. This is a huge time saver since you do not have to switch between two different apps.
Pros
- 📱 The community forums in the Pregnancy App & Baby Tracker are seriously the best. I have tried the ones in What to Expect and Glow, but the BabyCenter groups are way more active and moderated much better. You get answers to your questions within minutes, not hours.
- 🔍 The search feature for articles is super fast and accurate. If I search "back pain" in the BabyCenter app, it pulls up the most relevant articles first. In Ovia, the search often gives me generic results that do not really answer my specific question.
- ⏰ The daily notifications are actually useful and not just spam. Some apps, like The Bump, send you generic tips that feel copy-pasted. BabyCenter's notifications are personalized based on your specific week, so it feels like the app actually knows where you are in your journey.
Cons
- 📈 The in-app ads can be really annoying, especially compared to What to Expect, which has fewer ads. Every time I log a kick or read an article, an ad pops up asking me to buy baby products. It disrupts the flow of using the app.
- 💾 The app can be a bit slow to load sometimes, especially the community section. Ovia is much snappier when it comes to opening new pages. If you are trying to quickly check something, the loading time in the BabyCenter app can be frustrating.
- 📊 The tracking tools for feeding and sleep after the baby is born are not as detailed as those in the Sprout app. Sprout lets you track exact ounces and minutes, while the BabyCenter app only gives you basic options like "breast" or "bottle." It feels a bit too simplified for parents who want data.
