So, I recently got into this fun little app called Hair Color & Hairstyle Try On by Toon Tech Ltd. It's basically a virtual makeover tool where you can upload your photo and experiment with different haircuts and hair colors without the commitment. The app first launched a few years back and is available on both the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store. On Google Play alone, the app has racked up over ten million installs, which tells you it's pretty popular. It's completely free to download, and you don't really need to register or sign up to start using it, though they do push some in-app ads now and then. There are also in-app purchases if you want to unlock premium hairstyles or remove those ads.

Using the app is pretty straightforward. You just take a selfie or pick a photo from your gallery, and then you can scroll through dozens of hairstyles and color palettes. The app does a decent job of mapping the new hair onto your head shape, but you might need to adjust the alignment manually sometimes if your photo isn't perfectly centered. A tip I picked up is to use a photo with good lighting and your hair pulled back, that way the app can detect your face and hairline more accurately. You can also save your favorite looks to compare them side by side later.

I've tried a couple of similar apps like YouCam Makeup and Style My Hair, but I keep coming back to this one. The reason is that Hair Color & Hairstyle Try On feels less cluttered and more focused on just hair. With YouCam, I felt like I was wading through a hundred different makeup features before I could try a haircut. This app just gets straight to the point, which I appreciate when I'm just browsing for a new look.

Features

  • 🆚 Hair Color & Hairstyle Try On gives you a massive library of hairstyles and colors compared to YouCam Makeup. YouCam has a decent selection, but I found that the Try On app updates its catalog more often with trending styles like the wolf cut or curtain bangs. You can also tweak the color intensity, which YouCam locks behind a paywall.
  • 🆚 Another standout feature is the AI detection. While Style My Hair by L'Oreal sometimes struggles with curly or textured hair, this app handles it surprisingly well. The algorithm does a good job of blending the virtual hair with your actual ears and forehead, making the preview look more natural. It's not perfect, but it's faster than the competition.
  • 🆚 The app also lets you save multiple looks in a single session without forcing you to create an account. Most other apps, like the ones from beauty brands, nag you to sign up before you can even swipe through five styles. Here, you can take your time, save a few screenshots, and decide later.

Pros

  • 👍 The biggest strength is the sheer variety. You get hundreds of hairstyles and colors, from natural browns to fantasy blues, all in one place. YouCam Makeup has a decent set, but it feels more makeup-centric, while this app is clearly built for hair experimentation.
  • 👍 It's also super lightweight on storage. Compared to something like Style My Hair, which can be a bit of a space hog, this app installs quickly and runs smooth even on older phones. I didn't notice any lag when swapping between colors.
  • 👍 The simplicity is another win. There's no learning curve. You open it, upload a photo, and start browsing. No complicated menus or tutorials. For someone who just wants a quick preview, that's gold.

Cons

  • 👎 The ads can be a bit annoying. After you preview a hairstyle for a few seconds, a full-screen ad pops up. YouCam is a bit more subtle with its ad placement, so this one might bother you if you're impatient.
  • 👎 The app requires an internet connection to load new hairstyles. If you're offline, you're stuck with whatever you already cached. Some competitors like Style My Hair have a few offline options, which would be nice here.
  • 👎 The realistic preview is hit or miss. Sometimes the color looks washed out on the app compared to how it appears in real life. You have to take the preview with a grain of salt, something I noticed less with YouCam's rendering engine.
