Steam, developed and run by Valve Corporation, is pretty much the go-to app for PC gamers to buy, download, and manage their games. It first hit the scene way back in 2003 as a simple update tool but quickly turned into a massive digital storefront and social hub. You can grab this app for free on the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store, though the full experience is really on a computer. On Android, the companion app has over 50 million installs on Google Play alone. It is free to download, but you do need a Steam account to use it. While downloading the app is no cost, almost every game and many features involve in-app purchases, and there are definitely plenty of ads for game sales and pop-ups, but no forced video ads.
Using Steam is straightforward. After you install the app and log in, you can browse the store, buy games, and start downloading them to your PC directly from your phone, which is super handy. A big tip is to use the library feature to remote install games so they are ready when you get home. Also, using the Steam Guard mobile authenticator in the app is a must for keeping your account safe from hackers. The community features let you chat with friends, view your profile, and even buy and sell items in the Community Market, though the mobile interface can feel a bit clunky compared to the desktop version.
Compared to similar platforms like GOG Galaxy or the Epic Games Store, I end up using Steam the most because of its sheer size and convenience. It just has the biggest library of games and the most active community. While GOG offers DRM-free games and Epic gives away free titles weekly, Steam's advanced features like Big Picture mode for controllers, remote play together with friends, and deep workshop support for mods make it the default choice for me. I have had my account for over a decade, so my whole collection is there, and it feels too much effort to switch now.
Features
- 🚀 Vast Game Library: Steam's biggest win over the Epic Games Store is its massive catalog with over 50,000 titles, including huge AAA releases and indie gems. Epic feels bare next to it.
- 💬 Active Community Hub: Features like friends list, in-game voice chat, and the community forums are built right into the app. This beats GOG Galaxy by miles for social features.
- 🔄 Remote Install and Play: You can queue downloads on your PC from your phone using the Steam app. It is a simple but outstanding feature that saves time and makes the app essential.
Pros
- 🎮 Cloud Saves Sync: This automatically backs up your saved games to the cloud, which is a strength often missing in older platforms like GOG Galaxy where managing saves is more manual.
- 🎁 Frequent Sales and Bundles: Steam's seasonal sales and bundles are legendary, offering huge discounts compared to the Epic Games Store's limited timed exclusives, saving you serious money over time.
- 🛠️ Steam Workshop Support: For modding, the Workshop integration in the app is killer. It is far easier than manually modding on GOG, letting you install mods with one click.
Cons
- 📱 Limited App Functionality: The mobile app lacks features like directly buying and playing games on thephone
