If you've spent any time digging through strategy games on Google Play, you've probably stumbled across Frost & Flame: King of Avalon. This is a hardcore MMO strategy game set in a fantasy world inspired by Arthurian legends, where you build a city, raise a massive army, and fight alongside dragons. It's primarily a mobile app, available for download on both Android and iOS, but FunPlus has also pushed it to PC via an emulator-friendly client on their official site, though not natively on Steam or consoles like Xbox or Switch. The game first launched back in 2016 and has since racked up over 10 million installs on the Google Play Store alone. It's free to download and play, which is the bait, but like any good city-builder in this genre, it's packed with in-app purchases. You'll see VIP tiers, resource packs, and speed-ups that can cost anywhere from a few bucks to hundreds of dollars if you're aiming to compete at the top. In-app ads are rare, but the game definitely nudges you toward spending to keep up with the whales.
Playing Frost & Flame is a serious time commitment. When you first install the app, you're dropped into a frozen tundra with a rundown castle, and your job is to rebuild it. The gameplay loop revolves around resource management, troop training, and researching tech upgrades. You gather wood, stone, food, and iron, train infantry, cavalry, and siege units, and then head out to attack monsters or other players. The best part, in my opinion, is the Alliance system. You join a guild of real players, and together you take down massive world bosses like the Frost Dragon or invade enemy territories in real-time wars. The combat isn't just about throwing numbers at each other. It involves troop formations, hero skills (you summon legendary figures like Merlin or Lancelot), and even dragon attacks that you time manually. My favorite aspect has to be the dragon mechanics. You collect dragon eggs, hatch them, level them up, and then ride them into battle. Seeing your dragon unleash a fire breath wave across a 100,000-troop army is genuinely satisfying, and it gives the game a unique flavor compared to a typical spreadsheet simulator.
If you've played similar games like Rise of Kingdoms or Last Shelter: Survival, you'll notice Frost & Flame shares the same DNA but with a fantasy skin. Rise of Kingdoms has a cleaner civilization-based system and better graphics, but I find Frost & Flame's dragon combat and hero system more engaging. Last Shelter is post-apocalyptic, so if you prefer castles and knights over zombies, this is your pick. What sets this app apart is the visual splash. The hero portraits are detailed, the dragon animations are flashy, and the world map feels alive with player activity. That said, the grind is real. You cannot progress fast without either logging in every few hours or spending cash. I recommend this game if you enjoy long-term strategy games and have a patient mindset. It's not for casual players who want quick matches. But if you can handle the slow burn and love coordinating with allies in Discord, you'll get hundreds of hours out of it.
Features
- Dragon Combat System 🐉: Unlike many strategy games where troops just auto-face each other, you can manually control a dragon in battle. You choose when to activate its fire breath or buff abilities, which can turn the tide of a fight. This adds a layer of skill that games like Rise of Kingdoms lack, where combat is more passive.
- Hero Collection & Leveling ⚔️: You recruit historical and mythical heroes like Arthur, Merlin, and Morgana. Each hero has unique active skills and passive bonuses that affect army types. Leveling them feels rewarding because they visibly impact battle outcomes, unlike in Last Shelter where heroes feel more generic.
- Alliance Wars & World Bosses 🏰: The alliance system is the heart of the game. You participate in 24/7 world boss events (like the Ice Dragon) that require teamwork to bring down. The rewards are huge, and the coordination needed is more intense than what you get in similar mobile MMOs, which often rely on automated rallies.
Pros
- High Social Engagement 👥: The chat and alliance events are remarkably active. I've made real friends through this game because you constantly need to coordinate attacks and resource donations. In games like Game of War, the chat can feel spammy, but here it's more focused on actual gameplay.
- Deep Strategy Layers 🧠: There's no single best troop type. You need to counter enemy formations, choose the right dragon element (fire vs. ice), and equip gear on your heroes. This strategic depth keeps the game fresh after months, unlike simpler games where you just maximize one stat.
- Generous Free Rewards 🎁: For a game with heavy monetization, it throws a lot of free items at you during events. You can earn hero shards, dragon gems, and speed-ups without spending a dime if you grind events daily. This is better than titles like Evony where free players hit a hard wall much sooner.
Cons
- Pay-to-Win Gap 💰: The biggest downside is that whales dominate the leaderboards. A player who drops $500 can crush a free player's army of 200,000 troops in seconds. In games like Rise of Kingdoms, you can at least hide your troops in alliance territory, but here the open-world aggression is brutal.
- Intrusive Push Notifications 📱: The Android app sends constant push notifications urging you to collect resources or join events. It gets annoying, especially when you're at work or asleep. You can turn them off, but the game relies on FOMO to keep you logged in, which feels manipulative.
- Repetitive Mid-Game Grind 😴: After leveling your castle to around 20, the quests become very repetitive. It's just "upgrade wall," "train 5000 troops," "research tech." There's little story progression after the initial Arthurian setup. Games like Last Shelter have more varied PvE missions that break the monotony.
