Subway® is the official app from the giant sandwich chain, first launched back in 2011. You can grab it for free on both the Google Play Store and Apple's App Store. To be honest, the install count on Google Play alone is over 10 million, which shows how many people use it to order their footlongs. The app itself is free to download and install, but you do need to create an account or sign in to use most features. There aren't any forced sign-ups just to browse the menu, but if you want to place an order or earn rewards, you need to register. As for in-app purchases, well, you are buying food through the app, so that's the main transaction. The app also has those annoying in-app ads, but they are mostly for their own promotions or limited-time offers, not third-party stuff.

Using the Subway app is pretty straightforward. You pick your store, choose your sandwich, and pile on the veggies. The best tip I can give is to save your favourite orders so you don't have to build a sandwich from scratch every time. If you know the store you go to, use the 'Favourites' feature. It saves you a ton of tapping. Another thing, always check the app for exclusive coupons before you go to the restaurant, as they often have deals you can't get in-store. The app also handles payment through Google Pay or a card, which speeds up the whole process when you pick up your order.

I have tried other food ordering apps like McDonald's and Domino's, but I ended up sticking with the Subway app primarily because of the customisation. With the Mcdonald's app, you order a set menu item, but here, you literally build your own meal. It feels more personal. Also, the 'Subway Run' feature for walking into a store and scanning your phone is much smoother than some other apps like KFC's, where you sometimes have to wait for them to call out your number. I simply prefer the Subway app for its unique 'build your own' experience and the consistent rewards system.

Features

  • 🎨 Better Customisation than a bittorent app: Most typical food apps just list combos. Subway® lets you tweak every single ingredient, from the type of bread to the final sauce. No other food app on Google Play gives you this level of detail without having to talk to a cashier.
  • ⚠️ The 'Subway Run' Feature: This is a standout. You walk into the store, tap it, and it signals you are there. It is way faster than the 'I'm here' function in the Starbucks app, which often takes a few seconds to register. The Run feature is instant.
  • 📱 Order History and Reordering: Unlike the Pizza Hut app, which sometimes loses your last order, Subway® keeps a perfect log. I can reorder my exact 'Spicy Italian, no onions, extra pickles' from three months ago. It makes the whole download and install worth it just for that convenience.

Pros

  • 🌟 Rewards that actually add up: Compared to the Quiznos app, Subway®'s points system feels more generous. You earn 'Subway Bucks' that you can actually use as cash later. It is a simple concept that makes you want to keep using the app.
  • 🌟 Wide store availability: While the Burger King app is great, the number of Subway locations on Google Play is insane. You can find a store in almost every gas station or town, which makes the app useful even for travellers.
  • 🌟 Consistent interface: The app's layout hasn't changed drastically like the Taco Bell app, which gets confusing after updates. Subway® keeps it clean, so you don't waste time relearning how to order your usual footlong.

Cons

  • ⚠️ Slow customisation process: The app takes forever if you want a complex sub. After you pick a type of cheese, it loads the next screen. It is definitely slower than the simpler interaction of the Chick-fil-A app, where you tap a combo and you are done.
  • ⚠️ GPS issues: This is a big one. Sometimes the app gets confused with your location, especially if you are in a strip mall. It offers you a store miles away. The Domino's app does a much better job of guessing your nearest store.
  • ⚠️ Payment glitches: On several occasions, my payment on Google Pay went through, but the order didn't submit. It is rare, but it is a headache that I do not experience with the local Chinese takeaway app.
