I've been using Upside: Gas & Food Cash Back for a few months now, and it's basically a cashback app that gives you money back on gas, food, and groceries. It was first launched in 2016 and is available on both the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store. On Google Play alone, it has over 10 million installs, which shows how popular it is. The app is completely free to download and install, and you don't need to pay anything upfront to use it. However, you do need to create an account and register with some basic info to start earning. There aren't any mandatory in-app purchases, but the app does offer optional premium features or bonuses if you want to boost your cashback. As for ads, you'll see some in-app ads, but they're not too intrusive—they mostly promote partner stores or offers.
Using the app is pretty straightforward. Once you install Upside from the Google Play store, you just open it and allow location access so it can show nearby offers. To get cashback, you pick an offer (say, a gas station that is offering $0.10 per gallon back), go there, make a purchase with a linked credit or debit card, and then scan the receipt in the app. A tip I found useful is to always check the app before you leave home—offers change daily, and some stations near me have higher cashback rates on weekdays. Another tip is to stack offers: use a credit card that gives you additional rewards on gas, like the Citi Double Cash card, and then get Upside cashback on top.
Compared to other similar apps like GasBuddy, I picked Upside because it offers cashback on more than just gas—it covers food and groceries too. GasBuddy only focuses on fuel, and while it has price comparisons, Upside gives you real cash back that you can withdraw later. Another app called Fetch Rewards is more about scanning grocery receipts, but Upside feels more immediate because you get money back on each trip. I wouldn't say it's perfect, but for a free app, it's done a solid job saving me a few bucks every week.
Features
- 🔋 Cashback on fuel purchases is the standout feature. Compared to GasBuddy, which only shows you fuel prices or gives you a tiny percentage back on some purchases, Upside consistently offers higher cashback rates per gallon. For instance, I often see offers like $0.15 back per gallon at Shell stations, whereas similar apps rarely hit that mark. You just claim the offer before you pump, pay with your card, and scan the receipt—super simple.
- 🍔 Food and dining cashback is another big plus. While apps like Fetch Rewards focus on grocery receipts, Upside covers fast food and restaurants too. So if I grab lunch at a pizza place, I can get 10% back. This feature isn't offered by GasBuddy at all, so it makes Upside more versatile for everyday spending.
- 📱 A user-friendly interface with a map view that shows nearby offers. This is a huge improvement over older apps like GetUpside (a prior version) that were clunky. The map updates fast, and you can filter by type (gas, food, groceries). Plus, the app's notifications are timely without being annoying—like “Hey, there's a 15% cashback deal at the diner down the street.”
Pros
- 🚗 Wide acceptance at major gas stations like Shell, Exxon, and BP. Unlike GasBuddy which partners with smaller chains in some areas, Upside has a strong network, so I rarely drive out of my way.
- 💵 Easy cashout options: you can get your cash via PayPal or a virtual gift card. Other apps, like Fetch Rewards, force you to redeem points for limited gift cards, but Upside lets you withdraw straight cash—no hoops.
- 📊 No complicated tiers or points systems. With Dosh (another app), you need to link cards, and cashback rates vary wildly. Upside keeps it simple: claim an offer, make a purchase, get cashback.
Cons
- 💸 Frequent app crashes on Android, in my experience. On Google Play, some reviews mention similar issues—like the app freezing when scanning a receipt. GasBuddy never had that problem for me.
- 📉 Limited offers in rural areas. If you live outside a city, you might only see a few gas stations. Apps like GasBuddy have better coverage because they rely on user-reported data.
- ⏳ Delayed cashback processing. Sometimes it takes 1-2 days for a receipt to be credited, whereas Cheddar (a food cashback app) processes almost instantly.
- 🔒 Requires linking a payment card for each transaction, which can feel invasive. Some people prefer Fetch Rewards because you only scan receipts, not link cards.
