You don't need to register to use it, so you can just download and install it and start scanning right away. The app is free to download, but it does have in-app ads. There's also an option to purchase an ad-free version if the ads get on your nerves. I grabbed it when I was looking for something to help me find lost screws in my workshop, and honestly, it does the job well enough for casual use.

Using the app is pretty straightforward. You just open it up, hold your phone flat, and move it around slowly. The app uses your phone's magnetometer to measure magnetic fields, so when it picks up a strong reading, it means there's metal nearby. A tip I picked up is to calibrate the sensor first by waving your phone in a figure-eight pattern, which helps get rid of false readings. If you're outside, try to stay away from big metal structures or power lines because they can mess with the readings. The app shows the strength of the magnetic field with a visual indicator, so you can see when you're getting close to something metallic. It's not perfect, but for finding nails in a wall or a lost ring on the beach, it's pretty handy.

There are other metal detector apps out there, like Smart Metal Detector or Metal Detector App by netigen, but I stuck with this one because it feels more polished. Pros

Cons

I compared it with a dedicated metal detector, and it's not even close. Smart Metal Detector had the same issue, so it's a common problem for all sensor-based apps.
• 🚫 No depth estimation: Unlike some similar apps, Gold Finder doesn't tell you how deep the metal is buried. This makes it less useful for serious treasure hunting. You just know something is there, not how far down it is.
• 📢 Too many ads in the free version: The in-app ads can get annoying, especially when you're trying to focus on a reading. I get that the app is free, but other apps on Google Play, like Metal Detector App by netigen, seem to have fewer ads. The ad-free purchase helps, but it's an extra cost.
