Metal Detector - Gold Finder is a utility app that uses your phone's built-in magnetic sensor to detect metals around you. It was first released in 2020 by Appwest Limited and is available for free on the Google Play Store. The app has racked up over 10 million downloads, which is pretty impressive for this kind of tool. You don't need to register to use it, so you can just download and install it and start scanning right away. The app is free to download, but it does have in-app ads. There's also an option to purchase an ad-free version if the ads get on your nerves. I grabbed it when I was looking for something to help me find lost screws in my workshop, and honestly, it does the job well enough for casual use.
Using the app is pretty straightforward. You just open it up, hold your phone flat, and move it around slowly. The app uses your phone's magnetometer to measure magnetic fields, so when it picks up a strong reading, it means there's metal nearby. A tip I picked up is to calibrate the sensor first by waving your phone in a figure-eight pattern, which helps get rid of false readings. If you're outside, try to stay away from big metal structures or power lines because they can mess with the readings. The app shows the strength of the magnetic field with a visual indicator, so you can see when you're getting close to something metallic. It's not perfect, but for finding nails in a wall or a lost ring on the beach, it's pretty handy.
There are other metal detector apps out there, like Smart Metal Detector or Metal Detector App by netigen, but I stuck with this one because it feels more polished. The interface is cleaner, and I like that it doesn't clutter things up with too many features. Some of the other apps on Google Play feel like they were thrown together, but Gold Finder seems to have had more thought put into it. The developer, Appwest Limited, also seems to update it fairly often, which is nice. I chose this over others because it was the first one I installed that actually worked on my phone without giving me constant false alarms. If you're just looking for a simple tool to use once in a while, this app is a solid pick.
Features
- 🔍 Real-time magnetic field detection: The app uses your phone's sensor to show live readings. I compared it with Smart Metal Detector, and Gold Finder's readings felt more responsive. It updates quickly when you move the phone, so you get instant feedback on where the metal might be.
- 📏 Distance indicator: It shows how close you are to a metal object with a bar that fills up. Other apps like Metal Detector App by netigen have this too, but Gold Finder's indicator is more accurate. It doesn't jump around randomly, which makes it easier to pinpoint a target.
- 🛠️ Simple, no-nonsense design: The app doesn't overload you with options. You just open it and go. Some similar apps have too many settings that confuse casual users, but Gold Finder keeps it basic. It's perfect for someone who just wants to find a lost nail without reading a manual.
Pros
- 🔋 Low battery usage: Unlike some other metal detector apps I've tried, this one doesn't drain my battery quickly. I used Metal Detector by netigen for a while, and it would heat up my phone and eat through the battery. Gold Finder is much more efficient.
- 📱 Works on most phones: I installed it on an older Android device, and it worked fine. Some apps on Google Play require newer sensors or have compatibility issues, but Appwest Limited seems to have optimized this one for a wide range of hardware.
- 🎯 Good for beginners: If you've never used a metal detector app before, this one is easy to figure out. The interface is intuitive, and you don't need any special knowledge to start using it. It's a big plus over more complicated apps.
Cons
- 📡 Sensor accuracy depends on your phone: The app is only as good as your phone's hardware. On cheaper devices, the readings can be unreliable. I compared it with a dedicated metal detector, and it's not even close. Smart Metal Detector had the same issue, so it's a common problem for all sensor-based apps.
- 🚫 No depth estimation: Unlike some similar apps, Gold Finder doesn't tell you how deep the metal is buried. This makes it less useful for serious treasure hunting. You just know something is there, not how far down it is.
- 📢 Too many ads in the free version: The in-app ads can get annoying, especially when you're trying to focus on a reading. I get that the app is free, but other apps on Google Play, like Metal Detector App by netigen, seem to have fewer ads. The ad-free purchase helps, but it's an extra cost.
